LECTURES & SPECIAL EVENTS

Friday, May 1, 6:45pm

DR. THOMAS HOWARD
"Faith & Modern Culture:
Reasons to Believe & Why Evangelical is Not Enough"
Prof. Howard was raised in a prominent Evangelical home (his sister is well-known author and former missionary Elisabeth Elliot), became Episcopalian in his mid-twenties, then entered the Catholic Church in 1985, at the age of fifty.

Like C.S. Lewis, who he greatly admires and has written about often, Howard is an English professor (recently retired, after nearly forty years of teaching), who taught at Gordon College and then at St. John's Seminary. He is a highly acclaimed writer and scholar, noted for his studies of Inklings C.S. Lewis (Narnia & Beyond: A Guide to the Fiction of C.S. Lewis [2006, 1987]) and Charles Williams (The Novels of Charles Williams [1991]), as well as books including Christ the Tiger (1967), Chance or the Dance? (1969), Hallowed be This House (1976), Evangelical is Not Enough (1984), If Your Mind Wanders at Mass (1995), On Being Catholic (1997), and Dove Descending: A Journey in T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets (2006).

Several of us here at ACCS were fortune enough to have a class with Prof. Howard while he was still at Gordon, and we can tell you he is an incredibly engaging speaker that you should not miss.  His lecture will begin at 6:45 pm - please come early for tea and dessert.

Wednesday, April 22, 6:45pm

Rev. Ed Brown
"Our Father's World: Why Christians Should Care About the Environmental Crisis"
Ed is the Executive Director of Care of Creation, an evangelical environmental missions organization based in Colorado.  He is also the author of 'Our Father's World: Mobilizing the Church to Care for Creation".  His lecture will address the provocative sub-question "are environmental problems sin problems?

  Friday, JANUARY 30, 6:45pm

Dr. Jim Hartley
"Are Markets Moral?"
Dr. Jim Hartley, professor at Mt. Holyoke College, will speak on the topic "Are Markets Moral?"  Prof. Hartley will begin with an overview of the recent financial crisis, and then step back and ask about the morality of markets--starting with Scholastic teachings on Merchants and Usury, what changed in the 16th-18th centuries, and a discussion of Democratic Capitalism and its virtues.

 Friday, December 12, 6:45pm

DR. SUSAN WENNEMYR
"Where Your Treasure Is .... Real-World Money Management
in an Ascetic Tradition."

Dr. Susan Wennemyr, former Dean of Davenport College at Yale University, is currently a financial planner at MassMutual Financial Group and at The Davis Group in Hadley, MA. Dr. Wennemyr recently published an article on faith-based financial management in Sojourners magazine.

 Friday, November 14, 6:45pm

Dr. Philip Towner, "Jude: The Obscured"

Dr. Towner describes Jude as a problematic New Testament book which is often ignored by the modern church, but one which retains real relevance and power.  How should we read and interpret Jude today?
Come on Friday night and be part of this dynamic conversation.

Dr Philip Towner is the Dean of the Nida Institute of Biblical Scholarship at The American Bible Society, and has an international reputation as a biblical translator.  In addition to many other works, he has just completed a commentary on the book of Jude!

FIELD TRIP TO VIEW ART EXHIBIT in Boston

See Rouault exhibit at the McMullen Museum at Boston College.  Sandra Bowden, president of Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA) will co-host a lecture and tour of the exhibit with museum curator, Stephen Schlosser.  The lecture will begin at 11am, and the tour will start at noon.

There is no cost for this event and all are welcome (reviews say the museum is a great spot for kids!).

We will meet at 8:00am at ACCS to carpool out to the Boston area.

PLEASE RSVP FOR THIS EVENT!  This is a tour especially arranged for ACCS, and we do need to know by August 15th at the latest if you're planning to attend.  Please let us know how many people will be with you, and if you'd be willing to drive (include the number of EMPTY seats in your vehicle if so).

Hope you can join us for this trip--but if not, we're looking forward to catching up with you at one of the fall events in Amherst!
